Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a home repair ministry based out of Johnson City, TN, and will repair homes FREE of charge again this summer for Avery and Mitchell County families! Using volunteer labor and the leadership of summer staff, ASP hopes to work for 12 or more families in the area- so take action to apply now. Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.

June 29 to July 4, 2015 – 7 pm nightly – The 35th Annual Singing in Hominy Valley will be held in Candler, NC at the Hominy Valley Music Park, cost is $15/adults, 12 and under are free, bring a lawn chair or rent one for $1. Appearing will be: Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Jeff and Sheri Easter, The Isaacs, and more, hosted by the Primitive Quartet. July 3 and 4, 2015 – The Avery County Solid Waste Dept. has announced that the Avery County Landfill will be closed on Friday, July 3, for the Fourth of July Holiday, will reopen on July 4 from 9 am to 1 pm; Collection sites will be open on July 4 on normal Saturday Schedule.
July 3, 2015 – 6 pm – The Cranberry Community will hold their annual 4th of July Parade and Cookout on Friday, July 3. Parade will begin at 6 pm and cookout will follow with fireworks beginning at dark.
July 3, 2015 – 6 until – The Johnson Brothers will be in concert as part of the Riverwalk Concert Series, fireworks will follow.
July 3, 2015 – 6 to 9 pm – The Band Kelley will be in concert at Carolina BBQ during the evening. The Band Kelley is from Appling, Ga and range in age from 9 to 23, a great family bluegrass band, all are welcome.
July 3, 2015 – 7 to 9 pm – Come for a special edition of the Crossnore Jam! From 7 to 8 PM there will be performances from the jam musicians. You can sign up for a slot. Then from 8 to 9 PM all will jam together. It happens Friday July 3 at the Crossnore Meeting House. The Crossnore Jam is held every first Friday of each month year round. Don’t miss the fun!
July 3, 2015 – 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm – The Minneapolis Community will hold their 4th of July celebration and end with shooting Fireworks at the Candlestick Retreat Center at Minneapolis Bapt. Church.
July 4, 2015 – 7 am to 10:30 am – Altamont UMC will hold their monthly fellowship breakfast at the Church’s Outreach Center. All are welcome.
July 4, 2015 – 7 am to 11 am – Heaton Christian Church will host their annual July 4th Country Breakfast in the church fellowship hall. Menu will include: Biscuits and Gravy, eggs cooked to order, sausage, bacon, country ham, waffles, fruit, and homemade jams and jellies, for more information contact the church at 733-9460
July 4, 2015 – 9 am to 1 pm – The Annual 4th of July Festivities in the Town of Newland will take place with a Kid’s Parade, there will be a number of events going on through out the day around town, including Duck Races, Raffle, Concessions and more. All invited.
July 4, 2015 – 8 am to 4 pm – The Annual 4th of July Car Show will take place at the Rock Gym in Newland. Food will be provided by Carolina BBQ and Skyland Ministries will be performing throughout the day. Free for spectators, over 100 awards to car owners including Best of Show, Car and Truck, GM, Ford, Mopar, plus Top 50 awards and 25 specialty trophies, for more information call 733-3558
July 5, 2015 – 6 pm – Heaton Christian Church will welcome Tommy Oaks and his son John Thomas Oaks for a presentation of the Musical written by John Thomas called “Star Queen”. Star Queen is based on the book of Esther and all are welcome!
July 5, 2015 – 6 pm – Calvary FWB Church in Glendale Springs will have Mountain Faith, Bluegrass Gospel group and America’s Got Talent performer, to the church for a concert on Sunday evening, July 5. July 6-10, 2015 – 6 to 8 pm – Pleasant Hill Bapt. Church in the Frank Community will hold Camp Courageous VBS at the Church for ages infant to teen. All are welcome.

July 11, 2015 – 9 am – There will be a Relay for Life Survivor Breakfast at the Golf House at Linville Land Harbor on July 11, 2015 at 9 am. August 8, 2015 – 5 pm – The 4th Annual Jim Greene Memorial Scholarship Concert will take place at Avery County High School.
August 11, 2015 – 7 pm – The Kruger Brothers will be in concert in Hayes Auditorium on the campus of Lees-McRae College as a fundraiser for the Habitat for Humanity. Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church and Habitat for Humanity welcome everyone out for a great night of fellowship. All proceeds from the evening will go to help build homes for locals. Cost is $30/ticket.
August 15, 2015 – 6 pm – Elk Mountain Church will be holding a special singing with the Mountain Echoes bringing the message in song. All are welcome!

TBD – The Avery County Humane Society will hold the 2nd Annual Doggie Fun Walk and 5K Run at Avery County High School For more information contact the Humane Society at 733-2333, all runners must be signed up by May 30 to receive T-Shirt, cost is $25/participant.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.
