“Left Behind in the High Country” meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Medical Building at Cannon Memorial Hospital. This is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, for more information contact Sandra Brock at 467-5379.

ELK PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH is offering Homework Help on Wednesday’s from 3 until 6 pm at the church. All local students are welcome, no cost for local students.
The Newland Volunteer Fire Department is seeking 5-10 new fire dept. members to join the team. As the community grows, so does the need for dedicated folks to volunteer for the service. Anyone who is seriously interested in becoming a volunteer with the NVFD may contact the dept. at 733-4011, you may drop in and pick up an application or meet during the weekly training meetings, each Monday at 7 pm. The NVFD is here to serve Newland and to assist the county with mutual aid to other departments when called upon.

April 27, 2019 – Healthy Kids Day will take place at the Williams’ YMCA in Linville. All are invited out for a great day of fun.
April 27, 2019 – 7 pm – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will hold a special singing with Mercy’s River and others at the Church. Everyone welcome to come out and worship.
April 27, 2019 – 1 pm until – Greater Remnant Church in Bakersville, NC (located at 1858 Hwy 80) will hold a Ramp Dinner with a variety of foods available, all are welcome, no cost, donations accepted.
April 28 to May 3, 2019 – 6 pm Sun, 7 pm M-F – REVIVAL – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will hold revival at the church with Rev. Wayne Jones bringing the message, all are welcome.
May 1-3, 2019 – 8 am to 3:30 pm – There will be a School Bus Driver Training at the Avery Learning Center for Mayland Community College. ACS is in need of good drivers, starting at over $12/hour with yearly increase. Contact Brian King at 733-6006 for more information.
May 4, 2019 – 3 pm to 7 pm – The Avery County Clerk’s Office will hold a benefit supper for Dave Barbour and family. Dave’s father passed away due to cancer recently and Dave and his wife, Tracie, had been taking turns taking him for treatments, along with them both taking him to Vanderbilt in Nashville. This results in both of them having to miss work, plus the expenses of travel, food, other children to care for, etc. To try to offset expenses, we want to help Dave and his family! The benefit will be on Saturday, May 4th at Mountain Glen Club House (in Newland) from 3pm – 7pm. Please make plans to attend as it should be a lot of fun! Also, if anyone can help with donations, food, auction items, or musical talents, please contact Linda Webb at the number on the flyer.
May 10, 2019 – 6 pm – Elk Park First Bapt. Church will hold an Auction at the Church to raise funds for a new furnace for the church. May 18, 2019 – 3 pm to 5 pm – Newland Christian Church will hold a Community Outreach Meal at the Church for anyone who is in need of a meal for them or their family.
Avery County Schools Kindergarten Registration will begin in April, if your child will be 5 on or before August 31, 2019 they are eligible for Kindergarten. Registration will take place April 29 – May 3, 2019 and you will need: Birth Certificate, Proof of Residence, Forms mailed by School System, Current Immunization Record for a 4 year old, and Current Kindergarten Health assessment completed by healthcare professional after 8-21-2018. Dates at Schools as follows, if you have questions, contact the schools: April 29 – Riverside; April 30 – Newland; May 1 – Freedom Trail; May 2 – Crossnore; May 3 – Banner Elk.
The Newland High School Alumni Association Scholarship program is open to applications for Students who have family members who attended Newland High School; Eligibility for the scholarship is based on GPA, and high school transcript must be submitted with the application. Must be submitted by March 31, applications available through the Scholarship Program at Avery High School.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend. For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006
