Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.

Blue Ridge Partnership for Children is bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the High Country.  The program serves children from birth until their 5th birthday, and each registered child will receive a FREE monthly book in the mail.  If you are interested you can register your child online at or call Carrie Hall at 733-2899 and she will assist you in the registration process.

The Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce will continue their 2nd Saturday Events throughout the summer during 2016.  The second Saturday of each month will have special events and discounts throughout Banner Elk, for more information go to or call 898-8395.

August 14-until, 2016 – 7 pm nightly – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will be holding Revival; Messages during the week from Rev. Justin Hodges, Rev. Michael Sheppard, and Rev. Jonathan Sheppard.  All are invited.

August 26, 2016 – 6 to 9 pm – GREATER NEWLAND ASSN. Free Friday Night Concert Series at the Bandshell on the Riverwalk in Newland hosts The Dave Calvert Collective for some family friendly fun.  All are invited.

August 27, 2016 – 9 am to 3 pm – The Avery County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will take place behind the Avery County Board of Education.  This is a free service for Avery County Residents, call 737-5420 or 260-9205 for more information on what Items will be accepted.

August 27, 2016 – 10 am – The Annual Step Up for Yellow Mountain Walk a Thon will take place at Avery County High School.  All are invited out for some great family fun and to help support Yellow Mountain.

August 27, 2016 – 3 to 5 pm – The Inaugural Corey Pittman Memorial Concert will take place at Avery County High School.  Come enjoy some great Bluegrass Music and help support the Corey Pittman Memorial Scholarship.  All are welcome, Donations will be accepted.

August 27, 2016 – 3 pm – The 4th Annual Pleasant Hill Bapt. Youth Rally will take place at the Tri-County Tabernacle in Spruce Pine, speaking during the evening will be Preacher Steven Aldridge and Evangelist Cody Zorn; All are invited, and for more information call Pastor Allen Laws at 385-1401.

Auguts 27, 2016 – 4 to 7 pm – There will be a Beans and Greens fundraiser sponsored byt Calvary Bapt. Church to raise funds for the Youth Trip; Menu will include Pinto Beans, Mixed Greens, Slaw, Onions and Corn Bread; all are invited, cost will be Donation; for more information call 260-1745 or 260-1062

August 27, 2016 – 6 pm – God’s Blessings Church in Elk Park will hold a benefit singing at the church with The Gospel Two and others bringing the message in song; All proceeds will go to benefit BJ and Shannon Brown with their newborn who is currently in the Hospital in Hickory. All are welcome.

August 27, 2016 – 7 pm – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will have a special singing with Joyful Noise and the Morning Star Baptist Church Singers, everyone is invited.

August 28, 2016 – There will be decoration at the Hughes Cemetery off of Squirrel Creek Road.

August 28, 2016 – 2 pm – Decoration Services will be held at Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville, all are invited.

September 3, 2016 – 8:30 am – The Avery Shrine Club will hold a benefit Golf Tournament at Sugar Mountain Golf Club, shot gun start, Captain’s Choice, $65/person, includes green fees, cart, and lunch; Mulligans $10/for 3.

September 4, 2016 – 9 am to 5 pm – The 2016 Elk Park Car Show at Jack Hicks Trucking.  There will be prizes for the top 30 cars, best of show and more.  Live music by Skyland Ministries, 50/50 drawing, and more, for more information call Claude Buchanan at 733-3558

September 7, 2016 – 5 to 7 pm – There will be a benefit dinner for Yellow Mountain Enterprises at FBC Crossnore, menu will include Jeff Pollard’s Famous Pork Tenderloin, Chicken, Baked Beans, Slaw, and Home Made Dessert; Cost is by Donation, all are invited.

Spetember 20, 2016 – 6 to 8 pm – There will be a pesticide meeting at the Avery Learning Center for Private and Commercial Pesticide applicators. This class is approved for 2.0 credit hours  in: G-Forest; L-Ornamental and Turf; N-Demonstration and Research; O-Ag Pest-plant; D-Dealer; X-Private. For more information call 733-8270

August 22, 2016 – 6 pm – The Avery Viking Soccer Team will be at home in non-conference action to open their home schedule of the 2016 season.

August 26, 2016 – 7:30 pm – The Avery Viking Football team will hold their home opener for the 2016 football season in MacDonald Stadium.
