“Left Behind in the High Country” meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Medical Building at Cannon Memorial Hospital. This is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, for more information contact Sandra Brock at 467-5379.
ELK PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH is offering Homework Help on Wednesday’s from 3 until 6 pm at the church. All local students are welcome, no cost for local students.
December 21, 2018 – 6 pm – The Rock United Christmas Play will take place at the Church, all are welcome.
December 22, 2018 – 8 am to 2 pm – Breakfast with Santa at Bella’s Breakfast and Lunch in Banner Elk, Kids under 12 eat free, all invited.
December 24, 2018 – 6 pm – Newland Christian Church will hold their Annual Christmas Eve Service at the Church; All are welcome.
December 24, 2018 – 6 pm – Elk Park Christian Church presents “The Gift” their Christmas Program, all invited.
December 24-25, 2018 – The Avery County Solid Waste Dept. Convenience Centers and Landfill will be closed for Christmas, they will reopen on Wednesday, December 26, with normal operational hours. They will also have Christmas Tree recycling collection at the Linville, Banner Elk, and Landfill sites.
January 1, 2018 – The Avery County Solid Waste Dept. Convenience Sites and Landfill will be closed; Landfill will reopen Wednesday, January 2, regular hours; Convenience Centers will reopen Thursday, January 3, regular hours.
January 5, 2018 – 6 pm to 9 pm – Bluegrass Night at Mitchell High School hosted by the Mitchell Drama Club, cost is $5/each, will feature the Toe River Drifters.
January 31 and February 1, 2019 – 6 pm nightly – Avery Middle School Panther Players present Peter Pan, Jr. All are invited to come out and support this hard working group of students.
February 5-7, 2019 – 8 am to 3:30 pm daily – There will be School Bus Driver training course at the Watauga Agricultural Center. No preregistration required, for more information contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.
