The Avery Pregnancy and Resource Center is expanding their services to the High Country and will be offering classes in Finances, Technology, Cooking and Sewing. If you are interested in any of these courses, contact Bob Brown at 733-2400 or 467-9812.
Fellowship Baptist Church is collecting non-perishable food items and hygiene items to be taken to War, West Virginia in September as part of Project Hope. Contact James Ballew at (828) 208-2033 for more information. Items may be dropped off in the Church Fellowship Hall at anytime or you can have them picked up by calling 733-6444.
The Main Street Cruise-In is back in Newland for 2017 as they line Main Street with Classics from 6 to 9 pm on select Fridays. April 29, 2017 – 8 am to 2 pm – God’s House of Worship will hold a community Yard/Bake Sale in the fellowship hall of the church. For more information contact Kimberly Hodges at 260-7181
April 29, 2017 – 4:30 to 6:30 pm – Providence Evangelical Church Youth Group will host a fundraising Spaghetti Dinner in the cafeteria at Newland Elementary School. Menu includes Spaghetti, Bread, Salad, Drink and Dessert, $7/plate, all proceeds will go to help group attend Camp, parking in lot next to Gym.

May 6, 2017 – 7 am to 10 am – Altamont Methodist Church will have a country breakfast on Saturday, May 6 from 7-10 AM. All your favorites will be there including country ham, sausage, eggs, biscuits, gravy, grits, and homemade jams and jellies. This month’s proceeds will benefit the Fred and Geneva Barber Scholarship given to deserving high school seniors.
May 6, 2017 – 7 am to 9:30 am – Mt. Calvary FWB Church in the Ingalls Community will hold a fundraising Country Breakfast at the church. All are welcome.
May 6, 2017 – 6 pm – There will be a benefit singing at Roaring Creek People’s Church for Lynard Hughes, singing will be the Sheppard Family, all are welcome.
May 7, 2017 until – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL – Lewis chapel free will baptist church will be holding revival with preachers Kenneth Baker and John Heirrigton
May 7, 2017 – 6 pm – Benefit singing for Janet Townsend who was diagnosed with cancer back in November of 2016. The singing will be on May 7th at 6pm at Roaring Creek FWB Church. The Peacemakers will be singing. Please come and support her, and enjoy some wonderful music, and have some great fellowship.
May 13, 2017 – 11 am to 1 pm – There will be a low-cost Shot Clinic at the Avery County Humane Society in Newland; Rabies shots for $10, Booster Shots for $15, and Feline Leukemia Shots for $20; call 733-2333 for more information.
May 13, 2017 – 12 noon to 5 pm – The 4th Annual Wine for a Reason fundraiser will take place at the Linville Falls Winery will take place to raise funds for the Autism Society of North Carolina. May 21, 2017 – 11 am – FBC Newland is hosting Children’s Sunday at the Church. All are welcome.
May 28, 2017 – 11 am – Pineola Presbyterian Church invites everyone to come join the 11am service at the church and/or attend the Cemetery Decoration, which begins outside at 12:30 pm. There will be a brief ceremony followed by grave decoration. A covered dish meal will begin around 1 pm with the church providing ham and chicken, attendees are asked to bring side dishes. Everyone welcome to join for a day of recollection, reunion, and renewal.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. April 29, 2017 – 7 am to 11 am – Riverside Elementary PTO will be sponsoring a Yard Sale at the school. Open to the public, if you are interested in renting a table to sell your items please contact the school at 737-5600 ext. 6510 or by emailing her at email@example.com.
May 1, 2017 – 4 pm – The Avery Viking Baseball team will host Beat Cancer with a Bat at the High School. All are invited to come out and enjoy a great day of baseball with many fundraisers to help raise funds for two special families in the High Country. All proceeds from the day will go to help Dede Andrews and Jada Daniels.
May 6, 2017 – 8am-11am – Crossnore Elementary’s Second grade will be hosting a multi-family yard sale in our cafeteria. Tables are $10 each. You may set up your table on Friday night. May 17, 2017 – 7 pm – The Avery High FCA/UIC groups will hold a special worship service at the school on the field in MacDonald Stadium entitled “Run to Jesus”. All are invited, bring a blanket or lawn chair and join for a night of student-led praise and worship.
Kindergarten registration will be taking place for Avery County Schools in the month of April. Please contact your local elementary school if your child will be 5 years of age on or before August 31, 2017. Dates of registration at each school are as follows. Each registration begins at 8:30 am.
