Fellowship Baptist Church is collecting non-perishable food items and hygiene items to be taken to War, West Virginia in September as part of Project Hope.  Contact James Ballew at (828) 208-2033 for more information.  Items may be dropped off in the Church Fellowship Hall at anytime or you can have them picked up by calling 733-6444.

Pittman Gap Community Church is raffling off a 2014 Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob, 13 Original Miles, cost is $100/ticket, and all proceeds go to the building fund for a new fellowship hall.  For more information or to purchase a ticket, contact Pastor Cotton Ray at 733-4789.

The Main Street Cruise-In is back in Newland for 2017 as they line Main Street with Classics from 6 to 9 pm on select Fridays.  The remaining schedule is as follows:  August 25, 2017, and September 15, 2017; For more information, contact Claude Buchanan at 828-733-3558

The Banner Elk Concert in the Park Series is Back for 2017, concerts are on Thursday Evenings at 6:30 pm at Tate-Evans Park, Robbins Amphitheater: See the Concert Line-up

Harpist Ann Appleton will be down at the Riverwalk Park behind MHS/Riverwalk Pizza on Saturdays at 9 am over the next few weeks with her Harp as she practices.  Anyone is welcome to come and listen.

**August 2017**

August 26, 2017 – 9 am to 3 pm – The Avery County Solid Waste Dept. will hold their Annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day behind the Avery County Board of Education.  Open to residents only, commercial waste will not be accepted.  For more information call 737-5420 or 260-9205

August 26, 2017 – 1 to 3 pm – The Historical Museum in Avery County will hold a special event at the Museum to celebrate the Old Avery County Jail.  Everyone who has connections with the Jail from 1913 to 1970 or has information on Jailers, Justice of the Peace, etc including information, photographs, names, etc. is asked to attend. They would like to have information prior to the event, please call Jimmie Daniels at 733-5170 or the Avery County Museum at 733-7111

August 26, 2017 – 3 pm – The 5th Annual Looking Unto Jesus Youth Rally will take place at the Tri-County Tabernacle in Spruce Pine.  Preacher Steven Aldridge and Evangelist Cody Zorn will be speaking during the evening, for more information contact Pastor Allen Laws at 828-385-1401; please contact Plesant Hill with number that will be attending

August 26, 2017 – 5 pm – The Annual Concert to raise funds for Children at Jack Hicks Trucking in Elk Park will take place on August 26 at 5 pm. The Primitive Quartet, The Inspirations, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, KC and the Elk Valley Boys, and more will be in concert. There will be food, bring a lawn chair, and come out for a great time in the Lord! All are invited.

August 26, 2017 – 7 pm – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will hold a special singing at the church will Mountain Fellowship and others singing, All invited.

August 27, 2017 – Decoration will take place at the Hughes Cemetery off of Squirrel Creek Road in the Hughes Community.

August 27, 2017 – 2 pm – Decoration Services for Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville will be Sunday, August 27, at 2:00 pm.  Hope to see you there.

**September 2017**

September 2, 2017 – 7 am to 10 am – Altamont UMC will hold their monthly fellowship breakfast fundraiser at the church. Menu is a Country Style Breakfast, all are welcome.

September 2, 2017 – 8 am Registration – The Annual Shriner’s Golf Tournament will take place at Sugar Mountain Golf Course, cost is $60/person, mulligans available for $10/for 3. Shotgun start at 8:30 am.

September 3, 2017 – The Annual Labor Day Car Show will take place in Newland.  For more information contact Claude Buchanan at 733-3558

September 5-9, 2017 – The Avery County Agricultural and Horticultural Fair will take place at Heritage Park in Newland.

September 8, 2017 – The 17th Annual Volunteer Avery Golf Tournament will take place at Land Harbor Golf Course.  $200/team, Texas Scramble Format, 12:30 Shotgun Start, 11 am Registration. September 14, 2017 – 6 pm to 7:30 pm – The Cooperative Extension Service will host the 2018 WNC AgOptions Grant Informational Session at Mayland Community College in the SAM Center.  For more information click here or call 733-8270

September 30, 2017 – 11 am to 6 pm – There will be a fundraising BBQ to help raise money for the adoption of Thomas and Kylie Dellinger at Crossnore Elementary.  All invited to come out for Music, food, fun, and fellowship. There will be putt putt and inflatables.

October 7, 2017 – The Annual Toys for Tots Car Show will take place in Newland, all proceeds will go to Yellow Mountain Enterprises. For more information contact Claude Buchanan at 733-3558

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

August 19, 2017 – 7 pm – Avery County High School FCA/UIC will hold their back to school Youth Rally at the High School. All are welcome to come out for a great night of fellowship.
