Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.

Blue Ridge Partnership for Children is bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the High Country.  The program serves children from birth until their 5th birthday, and each registered child will receive a FREE monthly book in the mail.  If you are interested you can register your child online at or call Carrie Hall at 733-2899 and she will assist you in the registration process.

September 4, 2015 – 7 to 9 pm – The Crossnore Jam will take place at the Crossnore Meeting House.  All are invited, come out and bring your instrument and have a blessed time of fellowship, takes place first Friday of each month.

September 5, 2015 – 7 am to 10 am – Altamont UMC will hold their monthly fellowship breakfast at the church, all are welcome to come out.

September 5, 2015 – 8:30 am – The Avery County Shrine Club will hold a Golf Tournament at Sugar Mountain Golf Club on Saturday, September 5.  Shotgun start at 8:30 am, cost is $65/person which includes Green Fees, Cart and Lunch, Mulligans available, 3 for $10.  Registration opens at 8 am.

September 6, 2015 – 9 am to 5 pm – The 2015 Elk Park Car Show will take place at Jack Hicks Trucking, there will be trophies for the top 50 cars, Best of Show, and more.  There will be a 50/50 Drawing and Live Music from Skyland Ministries, for more information call Claude Buchanan at 733-3558

September 6, 2015 – 11 am – Faith Baptist Church of Linville will hold their Homecoming Celebration on Sunday, September 6.  This year the church marks her 45th anniversary with preaching by the founding pastor, Rev. Fenton (Bud) Parker, as well as special music and dinner on the grounds.  Pastor Brad Calhoun invites everyone who attended Faith Baptist in the past, is related to the church family, enjoys his radio messages, or just wants to experience a blessing to come to the special service beginning at 11:00 a.m.  For questions or further information, feel free to call Pastor Brad at 828-260-4566.

September 7, 2015 – 7 am to 11 am – The Annual Labor Day Breakfast will take place at Heaton Christian Church, located on Curtis Creek Road in the Heaton Community.  Proceeds will go to help with “Move with Compassion” Ministries in Elk Park. Some proceeds will also go to help with Paul and Tami Dellinger who are dealing with medical bills because of their conjoined twins who are joined at the chest and share a heart.

September 15, 2015 – 6:30 pm – The Sons of Confederate Veterans will meet at the John B. Palmer Lodge in Burnsville; all are invited to attend at the Burnsville Town Center.  The group meets the third Tuesday of each month.

September 19, 2015 – 8:30 am – The 5th Annual Beech Mountain Community Club Golf Tournament will take place at Sugar Mountain Golf Course, registration begins 7:45 am, shotgun start at 8:30 am. Cost is $260/4 man team, Hole sponsor, $50, Format: Captain’s Choice.  For more information call 898-2576

September 26 and 27, 2015 – Forest Home Community Church will hold a Youth Fest, Saturday’s events will take place at 3124 Sugar Mountain #1 all day, and there will be a special service at the church on Sunday, Sept. 27, beginning at 10 am.  All are welcome, for more information contact Pastor Kyle Kitchin at 387-6093

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

August 29, 2015 – 6 pm – The 5th Annual Auction at Avery Middle School will take place to help raise money for the Avery Middle Football team.  Many great items available, golf packages, vacations and more.  Will take place in the School Cafeteria.
