Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.
Blue Ridge Partnership for Children is bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the High Country. The program serves children from birth until their 5th birthday, and each registered child will receive a FREE monthly book in the mail. If you are interested you can register your child online at http://www.imaginationlibrary.com or call Carrie Hall at 733-2899 and she will assist you in the registration process.
The Town of Crossnore will postpone Trash Pickup in town until Tuesday, May 31, due to Memorial Day.
MESSAGE FROM NCDOT: Slippery Hill Lane, between 19E (Russell’s Antiques) to Lick Log will be closed from May 23 through that week, possibly longer for repairs.

May 28, 2016 – 5 to 7 pm – Altamont UMC will be holding a Pig-Pickin’ at the church. This is a free event with food and fellowship for all ages. May 28, 2016- 7 pm – God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will be holding a special singing at the church. Singing will be Three Top Gospel and Sacred Ground. All are welcome.
May 29, 2016 – 10:45 am – Roaring Creek FWB Church will hold their annual Veteran’s Service and dinner on the grounds at the church. All Veterans are invited to attend this annual Memorial Day event, dinner will be provided following the morning service in the fellowship hall.
May 30, 2016 – 2 pm – The Annual Memorial Day Celebration on the Town Square in Newland will take place. This is also scheduled to be a dedication service for the new monument. All are invited to come out
June 1, 2016 – 5-6:30 pm – The Baptist Men of Crossnore Bapt. Church will be serving a smoked tenderloin and chicken meal with the fixings and dessert to raise money for the Missionary teams supported by the church. June 2, 2016 – 6 pm – The Avery Chamber of Commerce will be holding the annual Taste of Avery event at the Best Western Mountain Lodge in Banner Elk. There will be a number of Avery vendors in attendance to give a taste of what Avery has to offer. Tickets are $25/advance, $30/door, for more information call 898-5605
June 4, 2016 – 8:30 am – Pittman Gap Church will hold their annual Golf Tournament at Sugar Mountain Golf Course. June 4, 2016 – The 2nd Annual Paws for a Cause 5k and Doggie Walk & Silent Auction will take place at the Avery County Humane Society. The walk will begin at 10 am at the Shelter, there will be a Silent Auction, face-painting, and more. For more information call 733-2333
June 5, 2016 – 6 pm – First Baptist Church in Crossnore will be hosting Jeff and Sheri Easter at the church, it is a free event, freewill offering will be taken. All are invited.
June 12-15, 2016 – VBS – The Minneapolis Community will hold VBS at Minneapolis Bapt. Candlestick Retreat Center. All are welcome, classes from Birth to Adult will be available.
June 20-24, 2016 – VBS – Elk Park Christian Church will hold VBS at the church and all are welcome to attend. Each evening will begin at 6 pm.
June 26, 2016 – 7 pm – Crossnore Bapt. Church will have Southern Raised in concert at the church. All are welcome to come out for a great night of fellowship.
July 3, 2016 – The Avery Viking Wrestling team will host a fundraising BBQ meal at Linville Land Harbor Golf House. All are welcome.
August 6, 2016 – 8 am – Cannon Memorial Hospital will hold the Inaugural Swing for Scholarships Golf Tournament at Linville-Land Harbor Golf Club. Cost is $65/player, and deadline for entry is July 16, 2016. There will also be a silent auction during the event and all proceeds will go to raise money for local students who aspire to be in a medical field.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.
