“Left Behind in the High Country” meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Medical Building at Cannon Memorial Hospital. This is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, for more information contact Sandra Brock at 467-5379.
Kenneth Melton, Jr. is beginning to collect for the Toy Drive for the Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, Donations can be dropped off at Brenda Kay’s Crafts in Newland, Lowes Foods in Banner Elk, and He will be available at the Roses Parking area in Newland from December 1 to 13 collecting items.
November 12, 2018 – 11:30 am – Avery County Rotary will be hosting their annual Veteran’s Lunch at the Best Western in Banner Elk; Veteran’s and their family members eat free, all others may purchase a plate at $8/each. Dick Larson of Banner Elk will be the guest speaker for the event.
November 14, 2018 – 10 am – The Cooperative Extension Service will host a Send-off Celebration for the Avery County Christmas Tree to be used in the Blue Room of the White House during the Christmas Season. All are invited to come celebrate, please RSVP by calling 733-8270

November 17, 2018 – 4 pm to 7 pm – There will be a benefit Lasagna Dinner for Nicole Guinn and Chad McKinney at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church in Roan Mountain. November 30, 2018 – 8 to 9 am – The Trees for Troops trees will be picked up from the Avery County Cooperative Extension Center for delivery to our TROOPS. If you are interested in donating trees please contact Jerry Moody at 828-733-8270.
November 30, 2018 – The Annual 4H Christmas Tree Sale at Kohler Appliance in Newland will begin, if you have trees you would like to donate or need more information, contact Bobbie Willard at 733-8270

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.
