“Left Behind in the High Country” meets every Other Thursday at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Office Building. This group is a support group for anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide. For more information please call 828-467-5379 or 321-243-1640
May 26, 2018 – 1 pm to 4 pm – The Church of Jesus Christ in Newland will hold a Cruise-in for a Cure in the parking lot of the Church, located next to the Riverwalk Bandstand. All are welcome to come out, or bring a car and join in, all proceeds will go to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. For more information call Tracy Trice Dishman at 387-1578
May 26, 2018 – 6 pm – the Pyatte Community will be holding a Memorial Day BBQ at the Pyatte Community Building. There will be BBQ and Fixings, Hot Dogs also available, cost is $5/adults, $3/12 and under; Donations appreciated (Cash Only), and there will be Fireworks at Dark. All are welcome.
May 26, 2018 – 7 pm – Evolution Championship Wrestling returns to the Rock Gym in Newland. Come out for a great night of fun and help Cheer Jaren on to victory over the Scottish Lion Murphy Costigan. Great Fun! Doors open at 6.
May 27, 2018 – 11 am – Roaring Creek FWB Church will hold their annual Memorial Day Service at the church, all are invited. Veterans will be honored during the morning service and there will be dinner on the grounds following. Veterans and their families are encouraged to arrive around 10:45 that morning.
May 27, 2018 – 11 am – Pineola Presbyterian Church will hold Cemetery Decoration, all are welcome to attend services at the church at 11 am, followed by a special service outside at the cemetery at 12:30 with a meal to follow. The Church will provide Ham and Chicken, any attending asked to bring side dishes to share. All are invited.
May 31, 2018 – 5:30 pm – The Avery County Cooperative Extension Service will hold a Poultry Health and Disease Workshop; it will be held in the Horticulture Building at Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine. For more information CLICK HERE or call 733-8270

June 9, 2018 – 6:30 am to 11:30 am – Newland Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Fire Dept. Cost will be $7/a plate, under 5 eats free. All invited.
June 9, 2018 – 11 am to 3 pm – The Annual Shriners’ Poker Run will take place around the High Country, registration will begin at 10 am at Christa’s Country Corner, cost is $20/rider, that will cover t-shirt and meal

The Masons are selling Raffle Tickets for a $2000 voucher that can be used toward a vacation, all proceeds go to the Oxford Orphanage, will be drawn at the July 4 Parade in Elk Park. Cost is $5/each or $20/5 tickets, Contact Tony at 737-0867 or 387-1965 or see any of the Masons

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. May 21, 2018 – 7 pm – The Avery High Chorus Spring Concert will take place at First Bapt. Church of Crossnore. Featured during the evening will be a variety of music spanning culture and genre presented by some very talented students.
May 24, 2018 – 7 pm – Mayland Community College Foundation Will hold their annual Murder Mystery event at the Linville Falls Winery; the Drama Dept. from Mountain Heritage HS in Burnsville will be putting on the evening’s show with the food being provided by the Avery High Culinary Dept.
