Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a home repair ministry based out of Johnson City, TN, and will repair homes FREE of charge again this summer for Avery and Mitchell County families! Using volunteer labor and the leadership of summer staff, ASP hopes to work for 12 or more families in the area- so take action to apply now. Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.
Clean-up has started at the 2 Cemeteries on Roaring Creek. If you have items you would like to collect, please do so. Also, the mower is unable to tend to many of the duties that may need to be done so they are calling on the community to also be helpful in addressing cleanup on their own family grave sites. If stones need to be cleaned up or tended to please see what you can do to help as well.
April 13-16, 2015 – 6 pm to 9 pm nightly – There will be a Beginning Bee Keeping workshop for those interested in starting to keep honeybees. This will be held at the Avery Senior Center and is designed for those who are beginning to keep bees. Call 733-8270 for more information.
April 15, 2015 – 5 pm to 7 pm – There will be a Poor Man’s Supper at the Minneapolis Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. This will be sponsored by the Youth of the Church and will benefit the John W. Callahan Scholarship. Donations are appreciated, menu includes: Soup Beans, Slaw, Cornbread, Onions, Drink and Dessert.
April 17, 2015 – 10 am – The Special Olympics will take place on the Track at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk. There will be many events and all are welcome to come out and support these athletes as they compete.
April 18, 2015 – 6 pm – Curtis Creek FWB Church will be having the Mountain Echoes singing on Saturday, April 18, singing starts at 6:00pm, all are welcome.
April 20, 2015 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL – Curtis Creek FWB will have revival beginning on April 20, 2015. All are welcome, services will go as long as the Lord leads.
April 24, 2015 – 5:30 to 7:30 pm – There will be a Benefit Dinner for Peyton Taylor Buchanan at Riverside Elementary School. It will be a Spaghetti Dinner (with our without meat sauce), Salad, Bread, and Desert.
April 25, 2015 – 1 pm – the 2015 Elizabethton First FWB Church Golf Classic will take place at Elizabethton Golf Course. Cost is $50 per player and all are welcome. You may sign up as a team or individually. Format will be Captain’s Choice and Mulligans are available at $5/each. April 25, 2015 -4:30 pm until food is gone – Spaghetti Dinner at the Moose Lodge in Boone, benefit for the family of Tom Love to help pay for funeral costs. Cost is $8/plate and donations will be accepted.
April 26, 2015 – 7 pm – The Butterpats will be in concert at Fall Creek Bapt. Church in the Old Beech Mountain Community for their Fourth Sunday Night Singing. They will be accompanied by their parents, John and Jennifer Cockman of the Cockman Family. All are invited.
April 26-29, 2015 – 9:45 am and 6 pm Sunday, 7 pm Mon. to Wed. – REVIVAL – Pleasant Hill Bapt. Church will be holding revival services with Dr. Mike Bagwell from Tunnel Hill, GA. The Edwards Family from Burnsville will be singing during the Sunday Morning Service. All are welcome!
April 27 – May 1, 2015 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL – Spring Revival services will be held at Watauga Bapt. Church. Rev. Lynn Shook will bring the message each evening and there will be special singing nightly. All are welcome and invited to attend. For more information contact Pastor R.D. Watson at 963-0246.
May 2, 2015 – 5:30 pm – The Avery County Chapter of Hunters Helping Kids will hold their annual banquet at the Hugh Chapman Center of the Williams’ YMCA. The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. April 17, 2015 – 5 pm to 9 pm – Crossnore Elementary School will hold their Spring Fling on Friday, April 17, at the school. There will be fun for all ages, with Inflatables, Food from Chick-Fil-A, a live and silent auction, and the night will conclude with Fireworks from JeCo Pyrotechnics, all are welcome.
