**Education Calendar Listing at Bottom of Calendar**

Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway, open May through October.

Blue Ridge Partnership for Children is bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the High Country.  The program serves children from birth until their 5th birthday, and each registered child will receive a FREE monthly book in the mail.  If you are interested you can register your child online at http://www.imaginationlibrary.com or call Carrie Hall at 733-2899 and she will assist you in the registration process.

September 29, 2016 – 5 to 7 pm – The 6th Annual Benefit Dinner for Crossnore Elementary School will be held at Crossnore Presbyterian Church.  Menu includes Chili, Potato and Salad Bar; donations accepted; sponsored by Crossnore Presbyterian, Crossnore FBC, Fellowship Presbyterian, and Fletcher Presbyterian.

**October 2016**

October 1, 2016 – 7 to 10 am – Altamont UMC will hold their final Country Breakfast Fundraiser of the year at the church Outreach Center.  All are invited.

October 1, 2016 – 2016 – 12 noon to 7 pm – The Cranberry Middle 8th Grade will hold a Flounder and Shrimp Dinner at the school cafeteria to help raise money for 8th Grade trip to Washington DC.  Cost is $10/full plate, $5/half-plate, and take out will be available.

October 2, 2016 – 3 pm – The PAIL (Pregnancy and Infant Loss) Committee will hold their Walk to Remember and Balloon Release at the Riverwalk Park in Spruce Pine with a memorial service to follow.  All who have experienced this type of loss is invited to come and take part; for more information contact Carrie Hall at 733-2899

October 6, 2016 – 8:30 am to 2:30 pm – There will be a Private/Commercial Applicators and Contract Landscapers Meeting at the Watauga County Cooperative Extension Center.  For more information call 733-8270

October 6, 2016 – 4 to 6 pm – There will be a drop in Open House at High Country Community Health Dental office in Newland. There will be food, fun and activities for all ages.  Dental office is located at 504 Pineola Street in Newland.

October 7, 2016 – HOMECOMING – The Annual Homecoming Parade will take place in Newland.  Schools will dismiss at 1 pm and Parade Lineup will begin at 3:30 at the Square and the Parade will begin at 4.

October 8, 2016 – ALL DAY – Chestnut Dale Baptist Church would like to invite everyone to come help us celebrate our mountain heritage with our 21st Annual HERITAGE DAY on Saturday, October 8th from 8:30a to 4p. Come join a day of fun and celebration of our heritage. We will have great food, live Gospel and Bluegrass music and will be making apple butter. Craftspeople will also be displaying their abilities and wares, such as chair bottoming, wood-working and more. We will have a display of antique vehicles. We will have a Fish Fry cooked by VJ & Judy Storie from 11a until 2p. Entertainment begins at 11:30a with Ernie Penley. Then Mercy’s River will join us at 1:30p. October 9, 2016 – 6 pm – God’s Blessings Church will hold a special singing at the Church with Donald Harding and Family.  All are invited.

October 12 – 14, 2016 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL – Freedom Bapt. Church will hold Revival at the Church with Pastor Phil Kidd, there will be prayer room each evening at 6:45, services begin at 7, Special Singing each evening.

October 14, 2016 – 6 PM – Newland FBC will hold a Family Night at the Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Valle Crucis, dinner will be provided, cost is TBD.

October 27, 2016 – 10 am to 4 pm – Healthy Halloween 2016  will take place at the Rock Gym in Newland.  Sponsored by the Blue Ridge Partnership for Children, all are invited.  There will be an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the event from 11 am to 4 pm.  For more information contact Carrie Hall at 733-2899.

October 29, 2016 – 8 am – The Annual Halloween Hustle 5k to raise funds for the Avery Yo! program will take place at the Riverwalk in Newland.  For more information or to Register for the event contact Bobbi Willard at 733-8275

October 31, 2016 – 5:30 to 7:30 pm – Newland FBC will hold a Trunk or Treat at the Church.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

September 24, 2016 – 3 pm – The Avery Viking Marching Band will hold the Viking Classic at the High School in MacDonald Stadium.  All are invited.

September 27, 2016 – 6 pm – The Annual Brad King Bowl will take place at Avery County High School.  The Avery County Middle School Junior Vikings will take on Cloudland, all are invited to come out and enjoy a great night of football, fellowship, and charity.  All proceeds will go to an Avery High Junior who is Battling Muscular Dystrophy

October 1, 2016 – 7 to 10 am –  The Avery High School FFA club will hold a fundraising breakfast at Newland FBC from 7 to 10 am in the Fellowship Hall.  Cost is minimum donation of $7 per plate and all funds will go to help FFA students to to the National Convention in Late October.  All are invited.

October 7, 2016 – HOMECOMING – The Avery Vikings will host Hendersonville for Homecoming at Avery High School’s MacDonald Stadium.  Gametime will be 7:30 pm.
