“Left Behind in the High Country” meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Medical Building at Cannon Memorial Hospital. This is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, for more information contact Sandra Brock at 467-5379.

June 19, 2021 – 8 am to 2 pm – The High Country Sportsman Coalition will host the 24th Annual Kids Fishing Day at Mountaineer Equipment in Pineola. This event is in cooperation with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Registration will begin at 7 am, fishing begins at 8 am and prizes will be awarded. CLICK HERE for more information.

June 19, 2021 – 11 am to 2 pm – The Avery Humane Society invites everyone to come out and have some fun on June 19th at the Humane Society, located on Vale Road. Vendors will be on site, with Michael McLendon doing magic and balloon animals, there will be a special unveiling, luck of the draw discounts on adoptions, and a big announcement. All are invited! You might even get a kiss in the special doggie kissing booth!

June 20-23, 2021 – REVIVAL – Open Door Baptist Church will hold revival at the church beginning Sunday, June 20, during the morning services. Evangelist Randy Gross will bring the message Sunday morning at 11 am, Rev. Derrick Wilson on Sunday Evening and Wednesday Evening, Rev. Ronnie Milsap on Monday Evening, and Randle Milsap on Tuesday Evening. Special singing each evening. Service times are 11 AM Sunday Morning, 6 PM Sunday Evening, and 7 PM Monday – Wednesday Evening. June 25, 2021 – 7:30 pm – Skyland Ministries will be holding a worship service at the Bandstand in Roan Mountain behind the Post Office.  All are welcome to come out and enjoy an evening of music and praise.

June 26, 2021 – 9 am to 3 pm – The Avery County Heritage Festival will take place “On the Square” in Newland. There will be families set up with histories and genealogies, local authors, muisc, crafts, vendors, and more.  Sponsored by the Avery County Historical Society.

June 27, 2021 – 5 pm – Newland Christian Church will host the monthly Singspiration of the local Christian Churches, food at 5 pm and singing/message time to begin at 6 pm, all are welcome.

July 2, 2021 – 6:30 pm – The Cranberry Community will hold their Forth of July Parade. All invited out!

July 3, 2021 – ALL DAY – The Town of Newland will hold their Annual Independence Day festivities on the Riverwalk. A full day of entertainment, music, vendors, and concluding with a Concert and Fireworks.  All invited.

July 3, 2021 – 10 am to 3 pm – Emmanuel Baptist Church will hold their Inaugural Independence Day Car Show at the church. Many awards, Silent Auction, Food and more, Gates open at 10 am, awards at 3 pm, registration is by donation. CLICK HERE for more information.

**August 2021**

August 7, 2021 – ALL DAY – The Avery County Cooperative Extension Service will host the Draft Pull once again at the fairgrounds. Pull will be followed by a concert on the outdoor stage (weather permitting) featuring a couple of local artists.

**September 2021**

September 8-11, 2021 – The Avery County Fair will return the the fairgrounds located behind the Ag. Center on Vale Road.


June 14-18, 2021 – 6 pm to 8:30 pm – VBS – Belview Baptist Church. The theme is “Flight School”, aim higher and learn how to live in God’s Holy Truth! All invited.

June 24-26, 2021 – 24-25, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm; 26, 10 am to 12 noon – VBS – Elk Valley Baptist Church invites everyone to come out for Vacation Bible School at the church. All welcome!

August 11-14, 2021 – 6:30 nightly, 1 pm to 5 pm Saturday – VBS – Elk Park Christian Church will hold Vacation Bible School at the church. Everyone invited to join in on the Amazing Wonders!

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006
