“Left Behind in the High Country” meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Oak Room of the Sloop Medical Building at Cannon Memorial Hospital. This is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, for more information contact Sandra Brock at 467-5379.

ELK PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH is offering Homework Help on Wednesday’s from 3 until 6 pm at the church.  All local students are welcome, no cost for local students.

The Newland Volunteer Fire Department is seeking 5-10 new fire dept. members to join the team.  As the community grows, so does the need for dedicated folks to volunteer for the service.  Anyone who is seriously interested in becoming a volunteer with the NVFD may contact the dept. at 733-4011, you may drop in and pick up an application or meet during the weekly training meetings, each Monday at 7 pm. The NVFD is here to serve Newland and to assist the county with mutual aid to other departments when called upon.

February 12, 2019 – 6 pm – The Cooperative Extension Service will hold the 2019 Livestock Kick-Off Meeting on Pasture Improvement with Dr. Deirdre Harmon, Full Meal will be provided, please RSVP by calling 733-8270, meeting will be held at the Cooperative Extension Building on Vale Road.

February 13, 2019 – 6:30 pm – Avery High FCA/UIC will host a Pastors vs. Students Basketball Game as part of the COURTS FOR CHRIST Event, following the game the FCA/UIC Worship Band will hold a time of worship, all are invited. February 14, 2019 – 8 am – The Annual Landscape Contractor Meeting will take place at the Best Western in Banner Elk, please RSVP by calling 733-8270. All 7 credits will be available during the day.

February 14, 2019 – 12 Noon to 2 pm – There will be a Pop-up Market at the Rock Gym in Newland, bring your bags and stop in for free produce and other perishables courtesy of MANNA Foodbank, for more information call Tammie Woodie at 733-6006 or Dick Larson at 260-5389

February 14, 2019 – 2:30 to 5:45 pm – The Cooperative Extension Service will hold a Small Fruit Production Workshop for Direct Markets at Avery Farm in Plumtree, there is no charge, but registration is required.  To register contact Bill Hoffman at 733-8270

February 16, 2019 – 6 pm – Elk Park Christian Church will host a Valentine Banquet in the Fellowship Hall hosted by the Youth.  Cost is $12/person and menu includes: Chicken (Fried or Grilled), Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Mac and Cheese, Roll, and Tea or Water to Drink, all proceeds will go to the Youth Program at the Church.

February 17, 2019 – 2 pm to 4 pm – The Avery Middle and Cranberry Middle 8th Grade classes will sponsor the DC5K run to raise funds for the 8th grade trip to Washington DC in April. February 18, 2019 – 6 to 7 pm – Avery High School will hold a Curriculum Night at the High School in the Cafeteria for all rising 9th to 12th Grade Students and their families.  Any students who will be attending ACHS next year are encouraged to attend.  This yearly event is an excellent opportunity to meet teachers and staff members prior to spring orientation and registration.  Various service clubs and other school organizations will also be available for questions, For more information please call 733-0151.

March 20, 2019 – Mayland Community College will begin a Truck Driver Training Course at the Avery Learning Center.  March 20 will be a manditory orientation class, you must be registered to participate.  Call the Avery Learning Center at 733-5883 or CLICK HERE for more information

The Newland High School Alumni Association Scholarship program is open to applications for Students who have family members who attended Newland High School; Eligibility for the scholarship is based on GPA, and high school transcript must be submitted with the application. Must be submitted by March 31, applications available through the Scholarship Program at Avery High School.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

**The FIRST GRADUATING CLASS of Avery County High School will have a 50th Class Reunion next year.
