October 15 to 24, 2014 – The Avery County SADD Club is once again pushing for Votes for Celebrate My Drive, committing to keep teens safe on the roads.  They are asking everyone 14 and older to go to once a day and vote, every day, from Oct. 15 to Oct. 24.

Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

August 28 – November 20, 2014 – 6:30 pm each Thursday - There will be weekly DivorceCare Meetings at Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church in Banner Elk.  Childcare will be provided.  DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

October 23, 2014 – 6:30 pm - The Avery County Lions Club is looking for men and women who would like to be part of the largest service club in the world helping the visually and hearing impaired.   Please call 387-1757 or 387-7566 for information or come to a Lions Club meeting at 6:30 PM, Thursday, 23 October at Louise’s Rockhouse.

October 24, 2014 – 5 pm to 8 pm - There will be a benefit dinner to help get a Service Dog for Aiden Ingle.  Aiden is a young man suffering from epilepsy.  For more information click here: Information on Aiden Ingle; This will be a BBQ at the Roan Mountain State Park, all proceeds will go to the family to help get the service dog, cost will be $10/adults and $5/children; Tickets are being pre-sold for this event by going to Facebook

October 24, 2014 – 6 to 8 pm - The Williams YMCA will host the PUMPKIN BASH at the Y.  This event is free to the public and all are welcome to come out! There will be candy, food, fun, games, and more.

October 25, 2014 – 7:30 am - There will be a 5k Fun Run/Walk at the Avery Swimming Pool Complex to benefit the Avery Youth Opportunities After School Program, Entry fee is $20/by October 17, $25 after; Must pre-register to receive Halloween Huslte shirt, Fun run for youth begins at 8:45, 5k run/walk at 9 am.

October 25, 2014 – 8 am - Parent to Parent is sponsoring a Spooky Duke Race & Costume March, the 4th Annual Charles R. Duke Race for Families will take place at Appalachian State University.  Onsite Registration is available day of Race.  Go to or call 262-6089 for more information.

October 25, 2014 – 5 pm to 8 pm - There will be a Pancake Supper at the Newland Vol. Fire Dept. to benefit Masonic Charities and Local High School Scholarships, sponsored by the Linville Masonic Lodge, Donations of $5/adult and $2.50/child for a plate.  All are welcome.

October 25, 2014 – 7 pm - Long Ridge Baptist Church will be hosting their 4th Saturday night singing Oct 25th at 7 pm. Carolina Crossing will be with us. Please come and join us.

October 25, 2014 – 7 pm - God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk will have a gospel singing with The Peacemakers and KC and the Elk Valley Boys.  Everyone invited to attend.

October 26, 2014 – 6 pm - Mt. Vernon Bapt. October 27, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - New Hope Bapt. Church in the Ingalls Community will begin Revival with Evangelist Dale Owens, Located just off HWY 19E on Hanging Rock Road. All are welcome!

October 27 – 31, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - Flat Springs Bapt. Church will hold revival, William Souther will bring the message each evening and all are welcome to come!

October 29, 2014 – 6 pm - Newland FBC will hold their annual Harvest Festival.  There will be Bounce Houses, Games, Candy, Prizes, Face Painting, Cake Walk, Dinner and more.  All are welcome.

October 30, 2014 – 10 am to 4 pm - Healthy Halloween will be taking place at the Rock Gym in Newland.

October 31, 2014 - Deadline to sign up for fall Co-Ed Volleyball at the Parks and Rec Department.  Cost is $75/team.  League will start first week of November.

October 31 – November 1, 2014 – 8 am to 2 pm - There will be a Christmas Bazaar at God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk.  Included will be Crafts, Baked Goods, and a Rummage Sale, all proceeds will go to the Fellowship Building fund, all are welcome.  Looking for donations for the Rummage Sale, if you would like to donate call Sara at 467-7856 or Dimple at 898-5926

October 31, 2014 – 5 pm until 7 pm - Elk Park Christian Church, located at 220 Old Mill Road in Elk Park, will hold their 3rd Annual Trunk or Treat at the Church.  There will be games, food, treats, and candy.  All are invited to attend.

**November 2014**

November 1, 2014 – 2 to 6 pm - Roaring Creek Missionary Bapt. Church will hold their annual fall festival at the church; there will be inflatables, hay ride, games, treats, and more.  Costumes are welcome, but you are asked to not wear anything demonic, devil, or witch costumes.  Everyone is welcome, call 733-0637 for more information.

November 8, 2014 – 8 am – Join Appalachian’s Recreation Management Association Saturday, November 8, 8 a.m., at Holmes Convocation Center for the 6th Annual Black Saturday 5K Run/Walk.  All proceeds go to the Wayne Williams Scholarship Fund.  Early Registration (on, or before, Wednesday, November 5): $15 – Students; $20 – Non-Students. Late Registration (day of event): $25 – everyone.  T-shirts are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Refreshments and door prizes will be available for all to enjoy.  For more information, log on to

November 8, 2014 – 4 pm to 7 pm - There will be a benefit Spaghetti Supper to benefit Monica Gragg Kirby at the Newland Elementary School Cafeteria.  Cost is $7/adults, $4/children, carry-outs will be available.  This will be to help offset costs of medical bills that Monica has incurred due to a ruptured Brain Aneurysm.  She is now at home recovering after two weeks in ICU following surgery to repair.  Monica is 34, and mother to a 6 and 4 year old.  All encouraged to come out, sponsored by Elk Park FBC.

November 12-14, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - Freedom Bapt. Church in Spruce Pine will be holding Revival with Pastor Phil Kidd bringing the message each evening.  Church is located at 1353 Road Road in Spruce Pine, all are welcome.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

Avery Kids 4 Christ Basketball- Sign-ups are coming to a close and forms can be picked up at the church and returned to the church (First Baptist Church-Newland). Games begin on November 1st.  Grades K-6th grade boys and girls.

October 24, 2014 – 7:30 pm - The Avery Vikings will host the Madison Patriots at MacDonald Stadium.
