Banner Elk Fire and Rescue is collecting donations for Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church pastor, Rev. George Wright’s daughter, Nikki Wright.  Nikki, a 2013 graduate of Avery High, was diagnosed with CTEPH (Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension) and is facing extensive surgery to fix the condition.  Due to the nature of the diagnosis and the medical expenses that have been, and will be, incurred the Fire and Rescue is looking to raise funds to help the family.  If you would like to donate, please call 898-4623 or send your donation to Banner Elk Fire Rescue, 345 Shawnee Haw Ave., PO Box 175, Banner Elk, NC 28604.  Make Checks Payable to Banner Elk Fire Rescue.

Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

Support Boy Scout Troop 888 by participating in the Food Drive during the month of August. This is a National effort to collect food and personal items for the local community.  For more information please drop off items at Newland Town Hall, Avery Eye Care Center, and Carquest  of Newland; if you would like a distribution bag please call 387-7621.

August 28 – November 20, 2014 – 6:30 pm each Thursday - There will be weekly DivorceCare Meetings at Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church in Banner Elk.  Childcare will be provided.  DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

September 1, 2014 – 7 am to 11 am - Country Breakfast Fundraiser at Heaton Christian Church.  All proceeds will go to local needs. All are welcome!

September 5, 2014 – 7 to 10 pm - The William’s YMCA will host Shake, Rattle and Roll for Children’s Programs.  There will be a 1950’s style Sock Hop in the Hugh Chapman Center of the YMCA.  Cost will be $10 in advance or $15 at the door and all proceeds will go to the Y children’s programs.

September 5, 2014 – 6 to 9 pm - Come join the fun at the Crossnore Jam hotdog roast!  We’ll roast at  6, and jam from 7 to 9 PM.  It happens Friday September 5, at the Crossnore Meeting house.  The Crossnore Jam is held every first Friday of each month, year ’round.  Don’t miss it!

September 6, 2014 – 7 am to 10 am - Altamont UMC will hold their monthly Fellowship Country Breakfast, all are welcome to attend.

September 6, 2014 – 9:30 am to 1:30 pm - Spruce Pine Christian Church will hold their 2014 Women’s Retreat at the church.  The topic will be “The Home Experiment” focusing on Titus 2.  Guest Speakers will be Tina Wilson and Stacey Lynn Vines.

September 6, 2014 -12 noon to 3 pm - The William’s YMCA will host “Stay in Your Own Home” Fair at the Hugh Chapman Center.  This will be in partnership with the Avery Senior Center, call Kay Dechard at 737-5500 or email kayd@ymcaavery.org for more information.

September 6, 2014 – 6 pm - The Town of Newland will host an End of Summer Bash on the Riverwalk with Avery County Native Jeremy Autry and his band.  Crossing Avery will do a benefit show on the Riverwalk. A percentage of merchandise sales will go to The Jim Greene memorial Scholarship Fund. Admission free, bring your own chair. Firework display by JECO Pyrotechnics, Inc following the show. Sponsored by the Town of Newland and Newland Businesses.

September 7, 2014 – 6 pm - The Dixie Echoes will be in concert at Ivey Heights FWB, all are welcome to come out for great fellowship.

September 9-13, 2014 - The Avery County Fair will take place at Heritage Park in Newland, located behind Ingles.  This year the theme will be “A Century of Service to Avery” and will focus on the agrarian roots of the County.  There will be Educational days sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service on Wed. and Thurs., Sept. 10 and 11, which will cover many different aspects of the agriculture and history of the county. September 13, 2014 – 7 pm - Roaring Creek People’s Church will have the Mt. Calvary Singers at the church for a special song service, all are welcome.

September 14-17, 2014 – 6 pm Sun., 7 pm M-W - Homecoming and Revival at White Rock Bapt. Church.  There will be special singing each evening, Bros. Timothy Rupard and Dan Price will be preaching.  Homecoming will take place at 10 am on Sunday, Sept. 14, with Dinner on the Grounds, all are welcome.

September 20, 2014 – 9 am - The 7th Annual Avery County Toy Run will take place.  Registration will begin at 9 am at the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, the run will depart at 11 am and all motorcycles are welcome.  Riders are asked to bring a toy valued at $15, or will pay a rider fee of $15/rider. There will be free food, entertainment, and door prizes, as well as a 50/50 raffle, all are welcome.  For more information call Jerry Calloway (765-2098) or Tommy Burleson (457-5298).

September 20, 2014 – 7 pm - The Avery High Class of 1974 will hold their class reunion at Mountain Glen Golf Clubhouse, there will be music, dancing, food and fellowship, cost is $10/at the door, bring an appetizer or dessert; for more information join the Facebook group “Avery High 1974″

September 23, 2014 – 6 pm - The Avery County Cooperative Extension Center will be hosting a commercial recertification training for private and commercial applicators at the AVERY CAMPUS of Mayland Community College on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.  The training will begin at 6pm.  Call 733-8270 for more information.

September 24, 2014 – 9 am to 4 pm - The New Beginnings Diabetes Self-Management Program will be having a class for people with diabetes or who are borderline diabetic on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 9:00-4:00 at Avery County Health Dept. in Newland.  A team made up of an Eye and Foot Doctors, Pharmacist, and Registered Dietitian will be on hand.  Lunch is provided.  Registration and physician referral is required.  To register or for more information please call (828) 682-6118 ext 37.

September 27, 2014 – 7 pm - KC and the Elk Valley Boys will be in concert at Long Ridge Bapt. Church for their 4th Saturday singing.  All are welcome.

Are you an adult, or do you know an adult who would like to learn to read or learn to read better? Mayland’s Adult Education Dept. can help, call 766-1333 for more information.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

The Avery YO! program is accepting registration from August 25 to 29, 2014 for the 2014-15 school year.  The YO! After School program is available at all elementary and middle schools, and will begin on September 2, 2014; more information is available by contacting the Avery County Cooperative Extension Service at 733-8270.

September 4, 2014 – Appalachian Admissions Counselors to visit and speak with any interested students at Avery High School (9-12)

September 4, 2014 – 5 pm to 7 pm - Financial Aid Evening from 5-7 PM in the Avery High School Media Center: Skip Watts from the College Foundation of NC will present to assist parents and students in this important process. He will provide an overview of the CFNC website as well as answer questions regarding planning, applying and paying for college. Skip will explain the different types of financial aid and the process for obtaining each type.

September 5, 2014 – 7:30 pm - Avery Viking Football hosts Thomas Jefferson, it will be Little League Night at MacDonald Stadium.

Newland First Baptist Church is holding their Youth Basketball League again and are looking for coaches for each age group.  The league is for ages K-6th grade, boys and girls, and begins in the middle of October.   Those who are interested can contact Jessica Howard at 260-6730
