Banner Elk Fire and Rescue is collecting donations for Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church pastor, Rev. George Wright’s daughter, Nikki Wright.  Nikki, a 2013 graduate of Avery High, was diagnosed with CTEPH (Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension) and is facing extensive surgery to fix the condition.  Due to the nature of the diagnosis and the medical expenses that have been, and will be, incurred the Fire and Rescue is looking to raise funds to help the family.  If you would like to donate, please call 898-4623 or send your donation to Banner Elk Fire Rescue, 345 Shawnee Haw Ave., PO Box 175, Banner Elk, NC 28604.  Make Checks Payable to Banner Elk Fire Rescue.

Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

August 28 – November 20, 2014 – 6:30 pm each Thursday - There will be weekly DivorceCare Meetings at Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church in Banner Elk.  Childcare will be provided.  DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

**October 2014**

September 29 to October 3, 2014 – 7 pm – REVIVAL - Pleasant Hill Bapt. Church will hold revival at the Church with Brother Darrin Waldroup from Bethel Missionary Bapt. Church in Spruce Pine.  Prayer Room will open at 6:30 pm and Services will start at 7 pm.

October 1, 2014 – ALL DAY - Everyone is challenged to come out to Move with Compassion Ministry in Elk Park and spend at least $1, this ministry to Elk Park is designed to reach out to the less fortunate of the community and County.  Located in the Old Elk Park Supermarket/Auction House.  Please come out and spend a little, even if only a dollar.

October 3, 2014 – 7 pm to 9 pm – Fall is in the air!  Time to enjoy some great music at the Crossnore Jam!  Bring your instrument, sing, dance, visit and just have a good time.  The Jam happens this Friday October 3, from 7 to 9 PM, at the Crossnore Meeting House.  The Crossnore Jam is held every first Friday of each month, year ’round.  Don’t miss out on the fun!

October 4, 2014 – 7 am to 10 am - Monthly Country Breakfast at Altamont UMC will be held.  All are welcome and invited to attend.

October 4, 2014 – 7 am to 10 am - Mt. Calvary FWB Church on Brushy Creek Road in Ingalls will hold a Country Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday Morning.  All are welcome to attend.

October 5, 2014 – HOMECOMING - Homecoming services for Emmaus Road Bapt. Church

October 6-12, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - Emmaus Road Bapt. Church holding revival services at the church with special singing each evening.  Speakers for the week: Mon – Derrick Wilson, Tue – Mike Rathbone, Wed – Jim Shoupe, Thurs – Ronnie Milsaps, Fri – Sun – Randy Groves.  All are welcome!

October 10-11, 2014 – 7 pm Fri. to 7 pm Sat. – PRAYER SERVICE - Pastor Gene Carver will be leading 24-hours of prayer at God’s House of Worship in Banner Elk.  He will be leading prayer at the beginning of each hour and all are welcome and encouraged to come and pray.  For more information call Pastor Carver at 733-2614.

October 11, 2014 – 8:30 am to 4 pm - Chestnut Dale Baptist Church would like to invite everyone to come help us celebrate our mountain heritage with our 18th Annual HERITAGE DAY. Come join a day of fun and celebration of our heritage. Great food including sausage biscuits and BBQ, live Gospel and Bluegrass music and will be making apple butter. Craftspeople will also be displaying their abilities and wares, such as chair bottoming, wood-working, blacksmithing and more. We will have a display of antique vehicles. October 11, 2014 – 5 to 7 pm - There will be a Pot Luck Supper at Pyatte Community Center, Donations accepted, Cash Only.  All are welcome!

October 12, 2014 – 11 am – Belview Baptist Church in Newland, NC will be having Friends and Family day service on Sunday October 12th . Sunday school at 10am and worship service at 11am. October 12, 2014 – 6:30 pm - Fall Jubilee Gospel Sing at Willowdale Bapt. Church in Vilas, NC with the Pine Ridge Boys and Charlie Griffin.  All are welcome! Church is located at 133 Westside Drive in Vilas.

October 25, 2014 – 9 am - There will be a 5k Fun Run/Walk at the Avery Swimming Pool Complex to benefit the Avery Youth Opportunities After School Program, Entry fee is $20/by October 17, $25 after; Must pre-register to receive Halloween Huslte shirt, Fun run for youth begins at 8:45, 5k run/walk at 9 am.

**November 2014**

November 8, 2014 – 8 am – Join Appalachian’s Recreation Management Association Saturday, November 8, 8 a.m., at Holmes Convocation Center for the 6th Annual Black Saturday 5K Run/Walk.  All proceeds go to the Wayne Williams Scholarship Fund.  Early Registration (on, or before, Wednesday, November 5): $15 – Students; $20 – Non-Students. Late Registration (day of event): $25 – everyone.  T-shirts are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Refreshments and door prizes will be available for all to enjoy.  For more information, log on to 5K.appstate.edu.

Are you an adult, or do you know an adult who would like to learn to read or learn to read better? Mayland’s Adult Education Dept. can help, call 766-1333 for more information.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

September 30, 2014 – 6:30 pm - The Annual Brad King Bowl will be held at Avery County High School in MacDonald Stadium.  The annual game between Avery Middle and Cranberry Middle will be a benefit fundraiser for Salvador Silva, a student at Freedom Trail Elementary school who suffers from seizures, you may make a donation at the game or by contacting the school. All proceeds will be held by the school and given to the family as needed for medical expenses incurred due to weekly and monthly appointments Salvador needs.

October 3, 2014 – 5:30 pm - Freedom Trail is holding their Annual Fall Festival at the school. There will be BINGO, prizes, games and more.  All are welcome to come support the school.

October 8, 2014 – 5 pm to 7 pm - Avery High Men’s Basketball Program will be having a fundraising Spaghetti Supper at Crossnore First Baptist Church; Menu will be Spaghetti, Salad, Bread, and Dessert! Cost is by donation! Please come out and support these kids as we begin the season!

Newland First Baptist Church is holding their Youth Basketball League again and are looking for coaches for each age group.  The league is for ages K-6th grade, boys and girls, and begins in the middle of October.   Those who are interested can contact Jessica Howard at 260-6730
