Banner Elk Fire and Rescue is collecting donations for Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church pastor, Rev. George Wright’s daughter, Nikki Wright.  Nikki, a 2013 graduate of Avery High, was diagnosed with CTEPH (Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension) and is facing extensive surgery to fix the condition.  Due to the nature of the diagnosis and the medical expenses that have been, and will be, incurred the Fire and Rescue is looking to raise funds to help the family.  If you would like to donate, please call 898-4623 or send your donation to Banner Elk Fire Rescue, 345 Shawnee Haw Ave., PO Box 175, Banner Elk, NC 28604.  Make Checks Payable to Banner Elk Fire Rescue.

Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by.  All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

August 28 – November 20, 2014 – 6:30 pm each Thursday - There will be weekly DivorceCare Meetings at Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church in Banner Elk.  Childcare will be provided.  DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced.

September 14, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - Justin Hodges and Little Richard Sheppard will begin revival at Ivey Heights FWB Church and will continue as long as the Lord leads.  All are invited.

September 14-17, 2014 – 6 pm Sun., 7 pm M-W - Homecoming and Revival at White Rock Bapt. Church.  There will be special singing each evening, Bros. Timothy Rupard and Dan Price will be preaching.  Homecoming will take place at 10 am on Sunday, Sept. 14, with Dinner on the Grounds, all are welcome.

September 17, 2014 – 7 pm - Crossnore FBC will have Brett A. Loftis, J.D., CEO of The Crossnore School, all are welcome to come and learn about the ministry and updates of The Crossnore School.

September 18, 2014 – 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm - Shoal Creek Bapt. Church in Burnsville will hold a free workshop about Therapeutic Responses and Interventions to Early Childhood Behaviors, Pre-Registration will be open until September 15, for more information call 828-682-0717

September 20, 2014 – 9 am - The 7th Annual Avery County Toy Run will take place.  Registration will begin at 9 am at the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, the run will depart at 11 am and all motorcycles are welcome.  Riders are asked to bring a toy valued at $15, or will pay a rider fee of $15/rider. September 20, 2014 – 1:30 pm – On Sepember 20th, the 8th ANNUAL NEWLAND SCHOOL REUNION will be held at the Rock Gym in Newland. This reunion is for anyone who had any connection to Newland Elementary and/or Newland High School. The schools were together until 1968. You did not have to graduate from Newland to attend. If you ever attended, taught or worked there, or if your family or friends went there, please attend. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. A short program with door prizes will begin at 2:30 p.m. The remainder of the afternoon/evening will be free for visiting, browsing through memorabilia and renewing old friendships. There will be a video of old photos and some music. A 50/50 drawing will be held at 4 p.m., must be present to win. REMEMBER, SEPTEMBER 20th at 1:30 p.m. at the ROCK GYM IN NEWLAND FOR THE NEWLAND SCHOOL REUNION!

September 20, 2014 – 3 to 7 pm - The 4th Annual Wayne Benfield Memorial Spaghetti Dinner will be held in the Crossnore Bapt. Church Family Life Center. All proceeds will go to Elana Townsend and Nikki Wright, donations accepted.  Entertainment will be provided by End of the Road, Connor and Caleb Horney, KC & the Elk Valley Boys, Son Road, and The Good Ole Boys.  Elana is undergoing treatment for cancer and Nikki is in San Diego, CA being treated for CTEPH, call Carter Blair at 260-1772 or Teresa Benfield at 442-2960 for more information.

September 20, 2014 – 7 pm - The Avery High Class of 1974 will hold their class reunion at Mountain Glen Golf Clubhouse, there will be music, dancing, food and fellowship, cost is $10/at the door, bring an appetizer or dessert; for more information join the Facebook group “Avery High 1974″

September 21-24, 2014 – 11 am and 6 pm Sun., 7 pm Mon to Fri - Homecoming and revival at Elk Park Christian Church, Dr. C. Robert Wetzel will be the guest speaker for Homecoming service and will preach each service for Revival, all are welcome.  There will be special singing each evening and a meal after morning service on Sunday.

September 21-24, 2014 – 6 pm Sun., 7 pm Mon to Wed. – REVIVAL - Bethel Missionary Bapt. Church in Spruce Pine will hold revival services with Bro. Dana Williams bringing the message, all are welcome.

September 22-24, 2014 – 7 pm nightly – REVIVAL - At Yellow Mountain Baptist Church Sept 22nd-24th 7:00 nightly Bro. Allen Laws from Pleasant Hill will be bringing the message

September 23, 2014 – 6 pm - The Avery County Cooperative Extension Center will be hosting a commercial recertification training for private and commercial applicators at the AVERY CAMPUS of Mayland Community College on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.  The training will begin at 6pm.  Call 733-8270 for more information.

September 24, 2014 – 9 am to 4 pm - The New Beginnings Diabetes Self-Management Program will be having a class for people with diabetes or who are borderline diabetic on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 9:00-4:00 at Avery County Health Dept. in Newland.  A team made up of an Eye and Foot Doctors, Pharmacist, and Registered Dietitian will be on hand.  Lunch is provided.  Registration and physician referral is required.  To register or for more information please call (828) 682-6118 ext 37.

September 27, 2014 – 11:30 am until food is gone - Mt. Zion UMC will hold a BBQ Fund Raiser at the Church in the fellowship hall.  $8/plate, $5/sandwich, Dine in or Carry Out, all are welcome. Church is located near the Avery/Mitchell County Line near Mayland CC.

September 27, 2014 – 7 pm - KC and the Elk Valley Boys will be in concert at Long Ridge Bapt. Church for their 4th Saturday singing.  All are welcome.

September 28, 2014 – 10:30 am – Squire Parsons will be in concert on September 28th at Greenvale Baptist Church -6909 Carters Valley Road, Church Hill TN.  Service time is 10:30AM.  There is no charge for the concert.  A love offering will be taken.  For more information call 423-262-9277.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start.  There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend.  For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006

September 20, 2014 – 2pm - Avery High School’s FCCLA club will host a cruse in at the High School on Saturday September 20th at 2:00pm. Individuals with classic cars are welcome to arrive as early as 1:30pm. There is no charge to showcase your car. There will be food, baked goods, 50/50 tickets, door prize drawings, face painting, live music, and items available for purchase. There will be a costume contest for individuals to dress up in attire from their favorite decade (50s-80s). Prizes will be awarded to the “best dressed” from each decade. Please come out and join us as we raise money for a good cause and enjoy some classic cars.

September 25, 2014 – 7 pm - Avery Viking JV Football hosts Owen at MacDonald Stadium

Newland First Baptist Church is holding their Youth Basketball League again and are looking for coaches for each age group.  The league is for ages K-6th grade, boys and girls, and begins in the middle of October.   Those who are interested can contact Jessica Howard at 260-6730
