Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

The Annual Avery County 4-H Christmas Tree Sale kicks off the first week of December. Good, Quality Trees will be available at reasonable pricing. All trees are donated by local growers and will be available at Kohler-Maytag Store in Newland 10 am to 4 pm Monday to Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Avery County 4-H program, for more information call 733-8270

December 15 and 17, 2014 - Forest Home Community Church , is having a TOY DRIVE . For the Children s Hospital in Johnson City . The toys must be new , made of plastic or rubber . This is to be cautious of germs (per Hospital Requirements) We plan to pick up toys Monday, December 15, from 11 am to 5 pm and Dec 17th from 8-6 pm, in the INGLES parking lot in Newland . December 17, 2014 – 9 am - Feeding Avery Families will be distributing food at the office in Newland for their monthly distribution. This will be a week early due to Christmas Holidays falling on that Wednesday.
December 18, 2014 – 7 pm - Oak Grove Bapt. Church in Newland will hold their Christmas Program at the church and all are welcome.
December 18, 2014 – 7 pm - Lewis Chapel FWB will hold their Christmas Program and all are welcome.
December 19, 2014 – 6:30 pm to 9 pm - The Town of Crossnore will hold a Christmas Bonfire at the Meeting House for all who would like to attend. It will be a great time of fellowship, caroling, and hot cider and cookies.
December 21, 2014 – 2 pm - Ivey Heights FWB Church will hold their Christmas Program at the church. All are invited and welcome to attend.
December 21, 2014 – 6 pm – Calvary FWB Church in Glendale Springs will hold two holiday performances. The Children’s Ministry will perform their production of “The Jesus Tree” in which each decoration will tell the story of Jesus that will capture the true meaning of Christmas; The Youth and Young Adult Ministries will then present “Love Covers all Sins.” This program will tell the story of a troubled young man who finds himself doing community service at a local church and through one little girl finds his way to the true meaning of Christmas. December 21, 2014 – 7 pm - Calvary Bapt. Church in Montezuma will hold their Christmas program at the church on Dec. 21 at 7 pm and all are welcome to come and celebrate the life of Christ during this Christmas season.
December 24, 2014 – 6 pm - Elk Park Christian Church will hold their annual Christmas Program at the Church. This year the youth will present “The Light has Come”. All are welcome to come out for this wonderful evening of worship in celebration of Christ’s birth.
December 24 and 25, 2014 - The Avery County Solid Waste Department will close Trash Sites and the Transfer Station on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day, Dec. 25; They will both resume normal operation on Friday, Dec. 26.
December 25, 2014 – CHRISTMAS DAY – 10 am - There will be a Holy Communion Service for the Community at Altamont UMC. All who wish to come and participate are welcome.
January 2, 2015 – 7 pm - North Beaver Bapt. Church in West Jefferson, NC will have Squire Parsons in concert at the church. All are welcome to come enjoy a great night of worship with one of America’s top song writers. For more information contact pastor Rick Miller at 336-649-0417 or 336-982-8658.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina has scholarships available from now until January 15th: The Walter Pop Jarvis, Powers Scholarship (in Don Powers honor), WNC Regional Scholarships, and the Harry W Clark & Henry Hart Scholarships. It is a lengthy process but well worth your time!
December 17, 2014 – 4 pm - The Vikings will host Watauga in the 2nd Annual Silent Night Game at Avery High School. The night will be filled with Charity Events, and the boys varsity contest will begin with no sound in the gym until the Vikings score their 10th point of the game. All are invited to be a part of this wonderful celebration of the Holidays. There will be a Silent Night dinner to raise money for the Avery Athletic programs beginning at 4:30 and going through the end of the Varsity Girls game, $7/per adult and $3/child, it will be an all-you-can eat benefit type dinner.
