Banner Elk Fire and Rescue is collecting donations for Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church pastor, Rev. George Wright’s daughter, Nikki Wright. Nikki, a 2013 graduate of Avery High, was diagnosed with CTEPH (Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension) and is facing extensive surgery to fix the condition. Due to the nature of the diagnosis and the medical expenses that have been, and will be, incurred the Fire and Rescue is looking to raise funds to help the family. Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.
Support Boy Scout Troop 888 by participating in the Food Drive during the month of August. This is a National effort to collect food and personal items for the local community. August 23, 2014 – 9 am to 3 pm - Avery County Household Waste Collection Day will be held behind the Avery County Board of Education in Newland. Commercial Waste will NOT be accepted. Collection items will include Pesticides and Herbicides, Paint, Gas, Oil and more. E-Waste will also be collected. The Avery County Sheriff’s office will also be running Operation Medicine Cabinet. August 23, 2014 – 10 am to 2 pm - Yellow Mountain Enterprises will hold their 4th annual Walk-a-Thon to raise money for the program. This year’s event will take place at MacDonald Stadium on the campus of Avery County High School. There will be fun activities for the whole family and all are welcome to come participate.
August 23, 2014 – 2 pm - The Mack and Della Hughes family will meet at the picnic shelter behind the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland for a family reunion. Gathering will begin at 2 pm and everyone will begin to eat at 3 pm, call 733-1196 for more information.
August 23, 2014 – 4 pm to 8 pm - There will be a Benefit Flounder and Shrimp Fry for Cindy Birchfield at Cloudland High School. This is sponsored by the local churches in Roan Mountain. $10/ticket, $5/10 and under, Can be purchased at the door. August 23, 2014 – 4 pm to 8 pm - Fundraiser for Paul and Amy Harris August 23rd from 4-8 pm at the First Baptist Church in Crossnore in the Family Life Building. Paul has recently had several surgeries, and Amy is fighting breast cancer. There will be BBQ, a silent auction and Cornhole Tournament. BBQ is $8 a plate minimum donation. Captain’s Choice format, $60/person, includes green fees, cart and lunch. Be there at 8 am to register, if you do not have a foursome, you will be added to one. Mulligans are 3 for $10.
September 5, 2014 – 7 to 10 pm - The William’s YMCA will host Shake, Rattle and Roll for Children’s Programs. There will be a 1950’s style Sock Hop in the Hugh Chapman Center of the YMCA. Cost will be $10 in advance or $15 at the door and all proceeds will go to the Y children’s programs.
September 6, 2014 – 9:30 am to 1:30 pm - Spruce Pine Christian Church will hold their 2014 Women’s Retreat at the church. The topic will be “The Home Experiment” focusing on Titus 2. Guest Speakers will be Tina Wilson and Stacey Lynn Vines.

September 6, 2014 – 6 pm - The Town of Newland will host an End of Summer Bash on the Riverwalk with Avery County Native Jeremy Autry and his band. Crossing Avery will do a benefit show on the Riverwalk. A percentage of merchandise sales will go to The Jim Greene memorial Scholarship Fund. Admission free, bring your own chair. Firework display by JECO Pyrotechnics, Inc following the show. Sponsored by the Town of Newland and Newland Businesses.
September 9-13, 2014 - The Avery County Fair will take place at Heritage Park in Newland, located behind Ingles. This year the theme will be “A Century of Service to Avery” and will focus on the agrarian roots of the County. There will be Educational days sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service on Wed. and Thurs., Sept. 10 and 11, which will cover many different aspects of the agriculture and history of the county. September 20, 2014 – 9 am - The 7th Annual Avery County Toy Run will take place. Registration will begin at 9 am at the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, the run will depart at 11 am and all motorcycles are welcome. Riders are asked to bring a toy valued at $15, or will pay a rider fee of $15/rider. There will be free food, entertainment, and door prizes, as well as a 50/50 raffle, all are welcome. The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. The Avery YO! program is accepting registration from August 25 to 29, 2014 for the 2014-15 school year. The YO! After School program is available at all elementary and middle schools, and will begin on September 2, 2014; more information is available by contacting the Avery County Cooperative Extension Service at 733-8270.

Newland First Baptist Church is holding their Youth Basketball League again and are looking for coaches for each age group. The league is for ages K-6th grade, boys and girls, and begins in the middle of October. Those who are interested can contact Jessica Howard at 260-6730
