Banner Elk Fire and Rescue is collecting donations for Mt. Calvary Bapt. Church pastor, Rev. George Wright’s daughter, Nikki Wright. Nikki, a 2013 graduate of Avery High, was diagnosed with CTEPH (Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension) and is facing extensive surgery to fix the condition. Due to the nature of the diagnosis and the medical expenses that have been, and will be, incurred the Fire and Rescue is looking to raise funds to help the family. Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.

July 24, 2014 – 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm - The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in collaboration with the High Country Rural Planning Organization (RPO) will be holding the second of three public involvement workshops to obtain public input on the Avery County Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP). Location of the second event will be at the Avery County Senior Center.

July 26, 2014 – 12 noon - Rain or Shine, Liberty Hill Bapt. Church in Spruce Pine will hold a Back to School bash. It will take place on the church’s softball field. Liberty Hill will distribute school supplies, child must be present to get items. Free Lunch and Inflatables. All are welcome. August 9, 2014 – 12 noon - The will take place. Darin and Brooke Aldridge will be in concert, also singing will be Ernie Penley, His Mercies, Elvis (John Greene), and more. Location is in the Gym at Avery County High School. This will be a benefit BBQ Dinner and donations will be accepted, all proceeds will go to the Jim Greene Memorial Scholarship Fund. Come out, bring your lawn chair, and enjoy a great day of food, fellowship and great Gospel and Bluegrass Music. $8/plate minimum donation.
August 9, 2014 – 6 pm - His Mercies will be in concert at Elk Park Christian Church with a cook out and fellowship time for the community. The group will be celebrating the release of a new CD. All are welcome!
August 9, 2014 – 7 pm - Curtis Creek FWB will hold a “Singing” for all who would like to come, special singing with a group coming from Georgia. All welcome.
August 10, 2014 – 11 am - Homecoming 2014 will be held at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church in Glendale Springs, NC, on Sunday, August 10. You are invited to be a part of the celebrating as the church is commemorates their 73rd year proclaiming the gospel near and far. Festivities will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a special concert by 2008 Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame inductee, Squire Parsons. Following the concert, the church will host an 11:00 a.m. worship service featuring singing by Squire Parsons and preaching by guest evangelist Rev. Denton Hart, Pastor of Mountain View Baptist Church in Creston, NC. Then head over to the church fellowship building immediately following the service for a wonderful Southern home-cooked meal. Van transportation is provided for the local area. The church is located at 3044 Old Wilkesboro Rd., just off High 16 and across from the Raccoon Holler Campground. August 23, 2014 – 9 am to 3 pm - Avery County Household Waste Collection Day will be held behind the Avery County Board of Education in Newland. Commercial Waste will NOT be accepted. Collection items will include Pesticides and Herbicides, Paint, Gas, Oil and more. E-Waste will also be collected. The Avery County Sheriff’s office will also be running Operation Medicine Cabinet. September 6, 2014 – 6 pm - The Town of Newland will host an End of Summer Bash on the Riverwalk with Avery County Native Jeremy Autry and his band. Crossing Avery will do a benefit show on the Riverwalk. A percentage of merchandise sales will go to The Jim Greene memorial Scholarship Fund. Admission free, bring your own chair. Firework display by JECO Pyrotechnics, Inc following the show. Sponsored by the Town of Newland and Newland Businesses.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend. For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006
The Avery County Pool Complex will open daily at 10 am beginning June 14, 2014. New for this season, a hot lunch will be provided by Avery County Schools; any child under 18 is eligible and must be at pool by 11 AM to register for the lunch for that day’s delivery.

August 2, 2014 – 11:30 am to 2 pm - Avery County Quarterback Club will host its Annual Football Frenzy for 3rd-8th grade football players and cheerleaders at the ACHS football field . Physicals will be offered for $20. Registration for Parks and Rec. football and cheerleading will be available. Competition, activities, tours of lockerroom and weight room will be offered as well. All participants will receive a complimentary lunch.
August 3rd – 11:30 am to 4 pm - Avery County Quarterback Club BBQ Fundraiser will be held at the Linville Land Harbor Golf Club House. BBQ Plates include BBQ, two sides, rolls, dessert and drink for $10. Take out available.
August 15, 2014 - Freshman Orientation will take place at Avery County High School for the incoming class. Any Student taking Honors English I are required to read “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles prior to returning in the fall. More information will follow in July.
August 16, 2014 – 10 am to 2 pm - There will be a Back to School Bash put on by the Avery County Schools at Land Harbor. This will be a wonderful way to kick off the 2014-15 school year.
