Every Sunday afternoon, the HWY 181 Motorcycle Rest Stop Ministry will be open from 12 noon to 6 pm offering refreshments to Bikers passing by. All welcome to come out, located at the old John Deere Dealership near the Parkway.
Avery Parks and Recreation Dept. will hold signups for Men’s and Women’s Basketball from November 1 until December 5 for anyone who is interested in playing this year. Team entry fee will be $300/men, $275/women; Play will begin on January 5th, must have 4 teams in each to compete.
November 22, 2014 – 7 pm - There will be a benefit singing at the People’s Church on Roaring Creek. The Young Family will be singing and all proceeds will go to Teresa Hopson, all invited and welcome.
November 24, 2014 – 11:30 am - Pastor Black will be at Glory1130 in Newland to distribute Thanksgiving Turkey and Ham.
November 26-27, 2014 - The Avery County Solid Waste Department will close Trash Sites on Wed. and Thurs., November 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving Holidays. The Landfill will be closed on Thursday, November 27, and all sites will reopen with normal hours on Friday, November 28.
November 27, 2014 – 12 noon til 2 pm - Thanksgiving Meal at Crossnore Bapt. Church. Anyone who would like to have a traditional meal for Thanksgiving is welcome to come. Please RSVP to the church by calling 733-5243 by November 14 so that they will know how much food to prepare.
November 29, 2014 – 8:30 am to 1 pm - There will be a special Thanksgiving Blood Drive at Cannon Memorial Hospital. There will be a special gift for each donor that comes and donates at this event.
November 30, 2014 – 6 pm - The Joyful Noise Quartet will be singing at Sandy Flat Bapt. Church for the evening service. Everyone is invited to attend. Located 2 miles out on HWY 221 from Blowing Rock
December 7, 2014 – 3 pm - Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home and Medi Home Hospice of Avery County will hold a memorial service in the Grandfather Chapel of the Funeral Home for families that have lost loved ones. They understand that the holiday season can be difficult for those who have suffered loss and would like to give everyone the chance to share memories and emotions during this season. A special ornament will be given in memory of the loved one and light refreshments will follow.
December 13, 2014 – 12 noon - The MasterMind Event is coming to Avery County. It will be held at Lees-McRae College on Saturday, December 13, at 12 Noon. Headlining the event will be Guest Speaker Walter O’Brien, the Real Life story behind the new hit Television Series </Scorpion> on CBS. Also appearing will be American Idol participant Desmond Meeks, and Ramona Radnor, Avery County Native.

The SCOTTIE Mobile Pre-K (click for information) is out and about and if you have a child who would be eligible for the classes but are unable to attend Pre-K, this is a service of the Avery Public School System and Smart Start. There are many locations throughout the county for folks to attend. For more information or a full list of the SCOTTIE schedule, contact the Board of Education at 733-6006
The Avery Middle School Giving Back Club will be taking Thanksgiving Food Donations now through November 21 at the School. Send non-perishable food Items with students to the school and they will turn items in during their TAG period and the items will be put into a local food pantry; The Giving Back Club will also be collecting items for their Fill the Sleigh campaign to help make a difference in local families for Christmas, Now through December 9, the club will be collecting toys for ages 0-12. The Avery Parks and Recreation Department will be holding Youth Basketball Signups through December 12, Registration fee is $45/per child, discounts available for multiple child households. Call 733-8266 for more information. Teams available from K-8 ages.
November 21, 2014 - The Avery Viking Football team will travel to Swain for the Second round of the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs.
November 22, 2014 – 5 pm - There will be a Karaoke Fundraiser at Carolina BBQ in Newland. All proceeds will go to the Newland Elementary PTO and you can come out and vote for your favorite teacher to do Karaoke, Also performing will be Newland Police Chief Jason Brown and Sheriff Kevin Frye, with Mr. David Burleson possibly making a singing appearance. All are invited.
